Former UFC fighter and ex-World Series of Fighting welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares has had a rough 2016. He was brutally knocked out by Emil Weber Meek at Venator FC 3, which snapped his undefeated run at welterweight, and now his return to middleweight has also ended in a knockout.

Palhares took on Poland’s own Michael Materla in the KSW 36 main event on Saturday. Early in round 2, Materla melted Palhares with a vicious uppercut, and that was all she wrote. The 36-year-old leglock specialist has been one of MMA’s more controversial figures. He was cut from the UFC after refusing to let go of a heel hook on Mike Pierce, even after multiple taps and the referee intervening to stop the fight. It was a 2nd offense for Palhares while under UFC contract, with the other one resulting in a suspension issued by the New Jersey Athletic Commission.

Palhares was stripped of his welterweight title and given an indefinite suspension after a series of infractions committed in his submission win over Jake Shields, including a refusal to let go of the fight-ending kimura. Despite that, Palhares has been able to compete in Europe, but the results have been disastrous. He’s now been KO’d or TKO’d 5 times in his last 5 losses.
