Jorge Masvidal can put himself in line for a shot at the UFC welterweight title with a victory on Saturday night and he’s looking to put on a show to push himself all the way to the front of the queue.
Speaking at the UFC 217 media day today, Masvidal spoke about his fight with Stephen Thompson this Saturday and said that he’s not intimidated at all by what “Wonderboy” is bringing to the party.
“For sure he’s my ticket [to the title],” Masvidal said. “He went ten rounds with the champ and both fights were really close. I know getting a good victory over him should be more than enough to put me there you know.
“I think he’s been solved a long time ago. He’s been figured out a few times already you know.”
He added later:
“I’m not impressed by the flashiness and stuff. I’m going to get in his face and fight him you know. I’m going to make it a fight, whether it’s a street fight, a brawl or a technical fight. I’m just going to make it a fight and make him work.”
Despite being in a similar position of just one win away from a title shot earlier this year, Masvidal feels that every situation is unique and that each fight has it’s own set of circumstances.
“Different fight, different situation,” Masvidal said. “Against Maia I made two technical mistakes that I repeated in the fight and having seen the tape numerous times it’s kinda different.
“The mindset is always the same – f*** somebody up and hurt them as much as possible”
“But, it was a different fight with Maia. A complete grappler vs a complete striker. I made technical mistakes in that fight.”
With Masvidal and Thompson both known for their striking prowess, “Gamebred” said he’s expecting a war and that Thompson won’t be able to keep the pace.
“He won’t take my pressure,” Masvidal said.
“He’s about to get busted up.”
