Dana White confirmed last evening that Tony Ferguson will face Kevin Lee for an interim UFC lightweight title belt.

With UFC 155-pounds champion Conor McGregor tied up fighting Floyd Mayweather until August 26, the UFC have seen fit to introduce an interim title until the Irishman is fit and ready to return to the Octagon.

White confirmed the news to reporter Brett Okamoto of ESPN, who posted the following video up on social media after the latest episode of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender series finished.

“I’m ready for Conor to get back to MMA,” White said. “We have to get past [McGregor fighting Mayweather] first. We got less than two weeks and then we’ll figure out what’s next.”

White then answered the question as to why the UFC didn’t rebook Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson given that was the fight originally set for UFC 209 in March.

“Khabib’s not ready,” White said. “He has surgery and he’s just not ready. So it is what it is.”

The UFC president then went on to confirm that Ferguson vs. Lee would likely end up on the UFC 216 card set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 7.

With this addition, the UFC 216 card is shaping up nicely with Lando Vannata also rebooked yesterday to take on Bobby Green.
